Meet VP of Technology AARON BRANDER

Aaron Brander, VP of Technology of MINDSCAPE at Hanon McKendry

“Building software takes focus, hard work, and a creative spirit. We have that in spades.” Aaron Brander, VP of Technology // MINDSCAPE AT HANON MCKENDRY

What made you want to become a web developer?

"In high school, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I thought it would be awesome to dive beneath the sea. Then I saw the average salary was around twelve thousand dollars. I decided computers had a better future."

What are three things you like most about MINDSCAPE?

"Great work; we've built a lot of cool tools and projects through the years. Great people; whether hanging out with our original team members or giving a hard time to the new folks, we have a great sense of family. Superior outcomes; receiving feedback from clients about how easy we have made processes for them or how they are killing it in their market makes the hard work worth it."

What attracted you to MINDSCAPE?

"When I started at MINDSCAPE, there were just four other people. I valued the chance to become a contributing member to a small and dynamic team. Plus, they let me work from home 2 days a week because I was commuting from Grand Rapids to Muskegon."

How do you typically spend your 4-day weekends?

"For my wife and I, it's all about travel. We love the flexibility to take quick trips to go hiking, visit a new city, or take in a ball game. But I guess that's what we most like to do. Typically it's sleep in, play video games, and ignore yard work."

What do you do for fun?

"Read. Yup, it really is fun. Fiction, history, or faction (you probably call it non-fiction), I like a wide range of things. I also enjoy writing. I've started, and not finished, a number of stories. I will finish them. Someday. Lastly, I enjoy athletics. Lifting, hiking, golfing, racquetball, volleyball and softball are all on my list of things to do."

What's your education background?

'In first grade, I learned a lot about dinosaurs. They were cool. In fifth grade, I really enjoyed space shuttles and astronomy. In high school, I was into fish and the ocean (at least until I saw potential future incomes). At Grand Valley State University, I walked onto the baseball team, played a lot of intramural sports and way too many video games. I graduated with a degree in computer science and a masters degree in Golden Eye and Halo."

If you could say anything to the person reading this, what would it be?

"Creating a website or a new application is hard work and it is time consuming. Luckily for you, we do this stuff because we love it. You bring the business knowledge - let us show you how to turn it into success on the Web."
